Giving personal information in job interviews

When attending a job interview, you are often asked to provide personal details, particularly about your work experience. Before the interview, it’s a good idea to:

  • Prepare answers to questions that you think the interviewer might ask.
  • Think of examples that demonstrate your achievements at work or school, and how you have dealt with challenging situations.
  • Reflect on your personal strengths and weaknesses, and how you would describe your personality.
  • Make sure you are familiar with the correct English expressions to describe your past experience.
  • Consider the type of person the interviewer is seeking. Put yourself in their position and ask why they should select you over other candidates.

The interviewer will also want to learn about your personal qualities. These are some examples of the kind of person they may be looking for:

  • A team player
  • Friendly and approachable
  • Reliable and long-term oriented
  • Hard-working
  • Good communication skills
  • Honest
  • Business-minded
  • Flexible
